Art teacher, educator, and fine artist. I'm also a wife and mother to four young artists who love to get messy with paints and explore their creativity!
My own art journey began when I was just five years old. From those very first classes, I couldn't stop drawing and painting. I truly know, deep in my heart, how incredibly empowering and joyful art education can be. It shapes you, it builds you up, and it opens up a world of possibilities. In fact, knowing these skills has had such a profound impact on my life – giving me confidence, a unique way to express myself, and endless joy – that I desperately wanted to give that gift to other children.
But when I started teaching young artists, I faced an unexpected challenge. How do you teach something that feels so natural and intuitive to me, in a way that truly clicks for them? My biggest desire was for kids to learn how to draw and paint independently, to actually understand why they were doing what they were doing, and not just rely on copying someone else's artwork. I wanted them to truly grasp the techniques and feel confident enough to bring their own ideas to life.
After countless lessons and trying every approach imaginable—from giving children complete creative freedom to offering strict step-by-step guidance—I was truly frustrated. Nothing seemed to truly empower the kids to create confidently on their own, in a way that fostered genuine understanding and independent thought.
That’s when it hit me: the solution wasn't about more or less structure, but about the right kind of structure. I needed to gently break down the fundamental skills that every artist needs, and then lovingly pair them with kid-friendly, wonderfully engaging projects that strike that perfect balance between guiding them and letting their own creativity shine through.
I tried this method—and it wasn't just a success, it was a revelation!
Soon, I started hearing the most heartwarming stories from parents. Their children were drawing at home, all by themselves! They knew exactly what techniques to use and felt so wonderfully confident bringing their own amazing ideas to life without needing constant help. This was it – this was the independent creation I dreamed of for them.
Now, after teaching hundreds of incredible students, I can confidently say: kids absolutely adore these art projects. But more than that, they truly thrive with them. It's often the most empowering and joyful art experience they've ever had.
And because I believe so strongly in the power of this approach – and because I've seen it transform so many young lives – I've expanded Let'sArtit! to reach classrooms and families all over the world. Through my courses and teacher training, I now have the immense privilege of guiding other educators to deliver the same powerful, confidence-building art experiences I've poured my heart into developing.
