It’s hard to break down years of learning art when art comes so intuitively to you or you’ve searched google for ‘how to teach art’ and the only things that come up are art tutorials or step-by-step projects.
I get it, it’s not your fault. It’s not easy teaching the foundational skills, when art is so intuitive. I’ve been there too and thought my students would just pick up skills on the go.
BUT THEN I REALISED..
What if…
I actually taught the fundamentals of art so that any student I teach can take the methods and apply them again and again independently.
Instead of teaching a step-by-step painting, I would teach them a process they could apply anytime they wanted to paint.
What if I took away my constant need to guide them, and instead teach them the method they need to use in their artwork?
I WOULD GET THEM TO BE ABLE TO LITERALLY DRAW AND PAINT ANYTHING THEY WANT BECAUSE THEY’D KNOW THE METHOD TO DO SO.
The truth is...
This process worked extremely well.
So much so, that I had kids who I taught, after I was told by their parents that they had no talent, and were drawing on a high level a few weeks later much to the parents astonishment.

Pessy Samson,
I’m a wife, and mom of three children who love to draw and paint and an accomplished artist and art teacher.
Yet, it wasn’t always that way. I started my art teaching career because I thought that if I am good at art, the natural career path would be to teach art.
But creating good art and teaching art in a way children and adults can grasp and understand is two different things.
I tried everything to try and work out how you can teach art so that students of any age can understand and enjoy art. You see, my students were getting frustrated that they didn’t know what they were doing and I was just telling them do it like so.
It was only when I understood that if I taught the methods for all the basic art fundamentals, the students would have skills they can apply to any artwork they approach.
I spent hours and hours googling and reading art books trying to find out where I could access this information. In the end, I broke every part of art down and created easy steps that any student can understand and kept on testing and tweaking until I realized it was working.
Doing this made me love teaching as my students were creating beautiful art with confidence and my enrollment skyrocketed.
I also had parents telling me that I was teaching their children, ‘more than art’ as I was enhancing their self-confidence and giving them a skill they could be proud of.
I was transforming the younger generation and I couldn’t have been happier!
I went from stressed-out, unconfident art teacher to loving my job and I am still at it, ten years later!
